Botanic Gardens and Open Gardens
Australia's Open Garden Scheme
is a non-profit organisation that began in 1987 with the aim to promote the knowledge and pleasure of gardens across Australia. They achieve this by opening to the public, private gardens of every size, style and description. Their website provides information about which gardens are open in your area.

The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, situated in Port Augusta (South Australia) has 200 hectares devoted to showcasing arid zone plants. This inspiring arid lands botanic garden also features an extensive Eremophila garden, conservation areas containing natural flora and extensive walking tracks. The award winning Visitor Centre has spectacular views of ancient Flinders Ranges.

The Botanic Gardens of Adelaide is an historic garden with native and exotic plant collections that includes palms, cycads, bromeliads and many spectacular mature trees and shrubs. The garden also features a magnificent, fully restored Victorian glasshouse (imported from Germany in 1875) which houses a display of Madagascan arid flora. Other features of the gardens are the Bicentennial Conservatory (tropical plants) and a 1.5 hectare International Rose Garden. The Schomburgk Pavilion includes a Botanic Shop which sells a diverse range of products with a garden related theme. The Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide was the first in Australia.

The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, established in 1846, comprises 36 hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens of Australian and exotic species. Their Water Conservation Garden features a collection of 80 different species of grasses, groundcovers, shrubs and trees from Australia and the world. The Water Conservation Garden enables visitors to learn how to create and maintain a low water use garden. The Botanic Garden's Shop sell products with a garden related theme.

Their members come from areas such as California, Australia and South Africa, areas which have similar climates to the Mediterranean. The central role of the MGS is to facilitate the exchange of information and experience via their quarterly journals.

The Nursery Industry Association of Australia (NIAA), together with State Associations, represents the interests of all sectors of the Australian Nursery Industry. Their site contains many interesting and useful links, both Australian and Worldwide, for Nursery & Horticultural Information, Garden Links for the Home Gardener, Government & Business Information, Trade Suppliers, and individual Nurseries and Groups.

Grey Water & Laundry Detergents
Lanfax Laboratories
- an independent, commercial and research organisation with special interests in soil, water and wastewater analysis. They have done extensive research on grey water containing laundry detergents. The site contains a comprehensive list of laundry detergents and their levels of sodium and phosphorus and explains their effect on plant growth.

Horticulture Courses
ACS Distance Education
has over 120 courses in gardening and horticulture, including 'starting a garden business' and 'getting jobs in the industry'. The site offers a free landscape course and newsletter.

Australian Correspondence Schools offer a unique range of services in correspondence education. They can service students internationally via the Internet and e-mail. Amongst the subjects offered is horticulture, which encompasses practical and formal training (Diploma level) for those seeking employment in the industry.

TAFE SA offers statewide horticulture courses and training programmes that are based on the sound principles of environmental sustainability and ecological sensitivity.

Nurseries
Goodwinii Eremophila Nursery
, located in Port Augusta (South Australia), grows over 250 varieties of Eremophila and Myoporum, plants native to the arid and semi arid regions of Australia. The nursery has a 3 acre display garden of mature plants and sells young tube stock on site and via their website. Eremophilas are suited to hot, dry conditions and have been adapted to grow in most areas of Australia.

Lambley Nursery in Victoria has a mail order service. The nursery showcases the plants that they sell in their spectacular gardens. They also have a dry climate garden and are specialists in plants that survive Australia's dry conditions. A plant catalogue is available.

Mildura Native Nursery stock Australian native plants, books and other innovative products. The site has a comprehensive directory of subjects related to native Australian flora and the environment.

Utopia Palms and Cycads sells Exotic Palms, Cycads, Seed and Seedlings for sale in Australia and all around the globe. Over the past 12 years they have set up collectors all over the world specialising in Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya and New Caledonia to name a few. Their seed is mostly wild collected where possible.

Australian Conservation Foundation is a national non-profit organization. The ACF campaigns on matters needing urgent action, such as preventing mining within our national parks and stopping wild rivers being dammed. Their vision is also for long-term reform, for accountable and ecologically sound management of our cities, industries and our natural heritage.

Birds Australia has 10,000 volunteers working to save many of our unique and beautiful birds from extinction. Last year (2000) 7.5 million native birds died needlessly, mostly through loss of habitat, a figure that equates to one in five native birds being faced with the threat of extinction. The site contains an Atlas of Australian Birds, information for watching, helping and studying birds, plus Birds Australia success stories.

Greenpeace Australia is an independent organization campaigning to ensure a just, peaceful, sustainable environment for future generations. Beginning in Canada in 1971, Greenpeace now has more that 2.4 millions supporters worldwide. Greenpeace Australia was founded in 1977 and today has more than 75,000 supporters.

The Wilderness Society is a national community-based, environmental organization whose mission is to protect, promote and secure the future of Australia's wilderness and other high conservation areas. Since forming in 1976, The Wilderness Society has protected over 5 million hectares of wilderness in Australia.

Trees For Life is a community-based organization based in South Australia. The organization is non-profit, non-government and non-political. Trees For Life is dedicated to the revegetation and protection of threatened and valuable bushland in South Australia. Trees For Life have a Bushcare Program where members of the community undertake to restore a patch of bushland.
