Santolina ( Lavender
Cotton ) is a small evergreen shrubby herb from southern Europe that attracts hover flies and ladybirds,
both essential predators in any garden. Santolina chamaecyparissus has
silver-grey leaves, Santolina viridis has green foliage. The plants
have aromatic leaves, with long-stemmed yellow button flowers in mid-summer, and are
easily propagated from cuttings. They are particularly suited to the drier climatic
regions of the world. Once established Santolina can survive with one deep
watering per month, making them excellent waterwise, xeriscape and drought tolerant
plants. The dried scented leaves are also used as an insect and moth repellent. |
