Lobularia, or Alyssum as it is more commonly called, is a short-lived perennial
that is most often grown as an annual. The plant is completely covered with round clusters
of tiny flowers during the main flowering periods of spring and autumn (fall). In
temperate climates it will often flower for most of the year but can look a bit ragged
during the hottest months. Alyssum has tiny green leaves which are mostly hidden beneath
the blooms. A hardy, fast growing plant for borders, mass displays and rockeries that
flowers within 8 weeks of sowing seed.
Alyssum withstands coastal conditions and likes a position in full sun. Moist soil is
preferred however the plant will stand drought conditions.
Lightly clip Alyssum after the first flush of flowers to encourage a continuous
display. Older plants can be removed as new self-sown plants appear. |
