General Information
Correa is a small genus of 11 species found in all states of Australia
except the Northern Territory. It was named in honour of the Portuguese botanist José
Francesco Correa de Serra, a friend of Sir Joseph Banks.
A variable evergreen native genus ranging in size from prostrate to medium shrubs, most of
which are waterwise.
All species have tubular bell shaped flowers, except Correa alba
which has open star shaped blooms. The flowers are a great source of nectar for honey
eating birds.
Correas are frost hardy, require well drained soil and prefer full sun, with some
species also continuing to flower in semi shade. They benefit from tip pruning after
flowering to keep a dense habit. Plants are generally disease free, but can be affected by
scale which is easily controlled with white oil. A
hardy genus of plants easily propagated from half ripened cuttings.
Species Correa alba
Place of Origin Australia (NSW, Vic, Tas, SA)
Height 1.5m/5ft
Flower Colour White
Flowering Season Autumn and Winter
Zones 9-10
Common Name White Correa
A hardy shrub from the sand dunes and rocky cliffs of coastal south-east Australia that
is very resistant to salt spray. Correa alba is a rounded shrub with a dense
habit reaching 1.5m high x 1m wide (5ft x 3ft). The open white flowers appear throughout
the year, with the main flush in autumn and winter. The 4cm (1.5in) leaves are grey-green,
thick and almost round.

C. alba var. pannosa has smaller
leaves covered in fine hairs giving it a rusty appearance. There is a pink flowered form. |
An attractive shrub for cool to warm temperate and mediterranean climates in a position
of full sun for the best flowering. It is suitable for container growing, informal hedges,
mass plantings and outstanding for coastal gardens where it helps to bind sand. Cuttings
can be used for floral arrangements.
Species Correa
'Dusky Bells'
Place of Origin Cultivar
Height 60cm/2ft
Flower Colours Pink
Flowering Season Autumn and Winter
Zones 9-10
Common Name Dusky Bells
An attractive cultivar with dull pink bell shaped flowers that appear amongst the
foliage in autumn and winter. 'Dusky Bells' has a dense habit to 60cm (2ft) high and a
spread of 1m (3ft), making it suitable as a groundcover or small shrub for edging and
rockeries. The small leaves are oval shaped and green.
Grow in cool to warm temperate, mediterranean and semi arid areas in full sun to very
light shade. Suitable for floral arrangements.
Species Correa
pulchella
Place of Origin Australia (SA)
Height 50cm-1m/20in-3ft
Flower Colour Pink, Red, Orange
Flowering Season Autumn and Winter
Zones 9-10
Common Name Salmon Correa
From coastal South Australia, this Correa is variable both in flower colour
and height. The long bell shaped flowers are 2.5cm (1in) long with a downy coating and
come in salmon-pink, orange or red. They appear in autumn and winter. The shrub can be
anything from semi-prostrate to 1m (3ft). The foliage is dense, dark green, again variable
in shape, with a lighter colour underneath.
This attractive shrub is one of the best Correas to grow for cool to warm
temperate, mediterranean and semi arid regions. Situate in full sun to part shade. Seaside
conditions are tolerated as long as some protection is provided. Only tip pruning is
required, but it will take heavy pruning and bounce back with more flowers and dense
growth. Suitable for containers and floral arrangements.
Species Correa reflexa
Place of Origin Australia (sthrn.Qld, NSW, Vic, Tas, SA, WA)
Height 30cm-3m/1-10ft
Flower Colours Red, Green, White
Flowering Season Autumn and Winter
Zones 9-10
Common Names Common Correa, Australian Fuschia, Native Fuschia (Vic)
Correa reflexa is represented in all states of Australia except for
the Northern Territory, in regions as diverse as coastal to the semi arid interiors. A
most variable species with forms ranging in height from prostrate to 3m (10ft). Leaves can
be long and narrow or oval, smooth or rough, and have small hairs underneath. The flowers
are tubular or bell shaped with a downy texture on the outside. They come in cream and
green, or red with green or white tips. The bells are 2-4cm (3/4-1.5in) long with reflexed
petals.

C. reflexa 'Fat Fred' has wide red bell
shaped flowers with green tips. |
An excellent Correa for the subtropics, cool to warm temperate, mediterranean and semi
arid areas in positions of full sun to part shade. This hardy species is moderately lime
tolerant and resistant to salt sprays. Tip prune after flowering to encourage compact
growth. Prostrate forms are ideal for rockeries and as groundcovers. Suitable for
containers and floral arrangements. |
