I took a look at the plants that I was growing and why it was, during that extended dry
period, that I was able to water some plants only once per week, and others not at all.
My other main interest is in organic pest
control. I felt that if gardeners were going to go 'organic', then they needed to be able
to easily recognise the insects in their environment.
With this in mind, I created the Colourful
WaterWise Gardening Software, a plant database of WaterWise, Xeriscape and Drought
Tolerant plants, that also incorporates Biological and Organic Pest Control.
In 1999, after 5 years of research and
photography, the Colourful WaterWise Gardening Software (version 1.0, we're now up to V
6.0) was ready for release. By this stage the original book concept had changed into a
CDRom (thanks to having a partner in the IT industry). We decided to go with the CDRom
format because it allowed the 'linking' of all the subjects on the CDRom.
With one of my aims for the software being to
have all the plants, flowers and insects readily identifiable, it became a huge job to
locate and photograph all the water wise and xeriscape plants, their flowers, and the
insect pests and their predators, that are included on the software.
I continue to research 'new' waterwise plants,
either by growing them myself or through a network of growers.
I hope you enjoy the Colourful WaterWise
Gardening Software as much as I've enjoyed researching and photographing the plants and
insects.
Happy WaterWise and Organic Gardening,
Lyn Phillips
